Local democracy is the hot topic at this month’s meeting as we welcome a Green councillor as our guest speaker – and look at proposed changes to how local government might be working across Essex.

Our first monthly meeting of 2025 is on the evening of Wednesday January 22 (from 7.30pm), where we have a great speaker lined up: Rachel Eburne of Mid Suffolk District Council, talking to us about what it’s like to be a local councillor and a Green in the room.

That is sure to lead into discussion about the Government’s plans for reorganising local government in their English Devolution white paper – which could see May’s Essex County Council elections postponed, and all of our familiar local government bodies (like Brentwood Borough Council – offices pictured – and Chelmsford City Council) disappearing over the coming years. Come along on Wednesday, find out more and have your say!

That will take place at our regular venue, Hey Joe in Ropers Yard just off Crown Street in Brentwood – and, as usual, will also be available hybrid via Zoom for those unable to join in person.

The minutes from our November meeting and AGM can be downloaded as a PDF to read below:

B&CGP 2024 AGM and November meeting minutes

Diary dates for 2025 – and Donations info

Our first Green Drinks of the new year will be on Wednesday February 26. Details will be confirmed after next week, but it will probably be back at The Ale House in Chelmsford again. All will be very welcome to come along as usual.

We will have another meeting in March (Wednesday 26th), and a Green Drinks in April (Wednesday 23rd). More info to follow in due course, and see the B&CGP website for more details.

While we’re on the website, we’ve been asked about donating to Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party – and if you’d like more information about how to do that on a one-off or regular basis and require our banking details, please see the Donate page on the website.

Brentwood-based local party member David Hale was among a panel of local politicians who attended a parliament evening last week organised by Brentwood’s explorers scout section.

Explorers leader William Beard reached out to Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party alongside others asking for a representative to join in the event and talk to the explorers, present our party’s stance on key issues and debate topics of interest to the explorers.

David (centre of photo) was keen to take part on behalf of B&CGP and was joined by several other Brentwood party representatives, to respond to a wide array of questions from the explorers, including immigration and gender identity.

Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party is always happy to get involved in similar local events, so please feel free to reach out to us at contact@chelmsford.greenparty.org.uk.

This month’s local party get together is a Green Drinks social on Wednesday September 25 – taking place at The Ale House near to Chelmsford train and bus stations.

It’s an easy location to get to by public transport from most parts of Brentwood and Chelmsford, so hopefully lots of members and supporters will be able to come along (from 7.30pm onwards) that evening.

If you’re one of our many new members since the Election, or just not been to a meeting recently, then this will provide a relaxed introduction to your fellow Greens. We’ll chat about topical political issues locally and nationally; what happened at the recent Green Party conference, and what’s going on at Westminster are bound to come up in conversation.

You can find The Ale House at: 24-26 Viaduct Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1TS. Everyone is welcome !

Future dates for your diary

Our meetings for the next two months will both be taking place at Hey Joe in Brentwood (10 Ropers Yard, Hart Street, Brentwood, CM14 4FU), as well as hybrid online via Zoom.

Next month’s date is Wednesday October 23. And then the Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party’s Annual General Meeting takes place on Wednesday November 27. Both will start at 7.30pm – and we’re hoping to have some exciting speakers lined up… so watch this space!

Also next month, Brentwood and Chelmsford Greens are playing host to this year’s AGM of Essex Green Party. You may have received an email from Essex Greens about this already, but if not it’s taking place on Saturday October 19 from 11am-3pm at: Quaker Meeting House, Rainsford Road, Chelmsford, CM1 2QL.

Green Party members from right across Essex will be coming along – and all from our area are welcome. So it’s a good chance to meet some new Greens.

They hope to have an excellent guest speaker, while there will be time to celebrate the recent Green election successes across the county, and plan election strategy for 2025 ahead of the Essex County Council ballot next May.

In Brentwood and Chelmsford we’re as delighted as every Green across the country that we now have four new Green MPs in parliament!

So with Sian Berry, Carla Denyer, Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns representing us in Westminster, it’s a great time to build on this momentum and get together to discuss all things Green in Brentwood and Chelmsford.

Luckily we don’t have to wait long as our next meeting is this coming Wednesday 24th, starting at 7.30pm! We’ll be meeting at a new venue this month: Hey Joe, the independent record shop now in new premises off Crown Street, at:

10 Ropers Yard, Hart Street, Brentwood, CM14 4FU

And we’ll also be on Zoom for those that can’t attend in person, with the Zoom link mailed to our email subscribers.

What an exciting time to be a Green – come along and join us this week in Brentwood!

Among items on the agenda we’ll have:

  • Election 2024 review and discussion
  • New members since election day
  • Annual GPEW conference
  • August summer social
  • Possible Chelmsford ward by-election
  • And anything else you’d like to raise!

With the General Election almost upon us, what better than a chance to catch up on all things Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party at our pre-election Green Drinks.

This month we’re meeting in Brentwood on Wednesday June 26, from 7pm, at The Peasants’ Revolt on Kings Road – handily between the station and High Street.

And you’ll hopefully get the chance to chat with the local constituency candidate, alongside meeting up with fellow Green members and supporters ahead of the July 4 poll.

Hoping to say hello on the night will be RJ Learmouth, our candidate in Brentwood and Ongar; although sadly Reza Hossain, our candidate in Chelmsford, is unable to attend this time.

All members and Green supporters will be very welcome to join the political chat and add their thoughts to our Election discussions!

Brentwood and Chelmsford Green Party member Paul Jeater travelled to Diss in South Norfolk for an Eastern Region Green Party action day in support of the party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsay, who is our candidate in the new constituency of Waveney Valley.

And Paul, who is our local party Treasurer, encouraged anyone from our area who can follow suit to head to the target seat to help Adrian’s campaign in its crucial final stages.

“To my knowledge Waveney Valley is an unusual constituency as it crosses county boundaries, North Suffolk and South Norfolk. It is largely rural, with few large towns,” said Paul.

“Diss, probably the largest, and on the main London to Norwich rail line, has a population of c.10,000. It is a new constituency created by the boundaries commission after the recent review.

“I met Adrian soon after I joined the party in 2011, at a council by-election in Norwich and he recruited me to the campaign team for the 2014 European Elections in Eastern Region, which, to a significant extent, kick started my involvement in the party.

“Close to a hundred members arrived at Diss to door knock and/or deliver leaflets in the town and surrounding villages and hamlets. In recent years the party has gone from strength to strength in this area. It currently is the majority group on Mid Suffolk District Council and has recently won a seat on Norfolk County Council in South Norfolk.

“With postal votes likely to be delivered to households this week, it is important to make contact with as many of these voters as possible in the next few days. For those not involved in active politics, the purpose of canvassing is to identify those who either will vote for your party or who are quite likely to vote for the party; it is not to try to convert people.

“On the whole the reception was very good. A number of residents said we were the only party they had seen. The number of Green posters around the town was encouraging, but I have no doubt that there are plenty of silent Tories, whose votes are still up for grabs. In the village I visited in the afternoon, it was a straight Tory vs Green contest. A number of people insisted that they could never vote Labour, but were disillusioned with the Tory Party and recognised that we were the party campaigning against the polluting of the local river and opposing the proposed installation of pylons from Norwich to Tilbury.

“Waveney Valley is one of our four target seats  in England, and my sense is it will be close. There’s just over two weeks to go in the campaign and every conversation and every vote will count.

“The more members of Brentwood & Chelmsford Green Party and Eastern Region Green Party who can attend between now and polling day, the more doorstep conversations & the more leaflets that can be delivered, the better. This is a fun day  with likeminded people, working towards getting our first MP in the East.”
